3 Steps to Web Development Projects

May 20, 2017

Is your business or organization looking to start a web project?

Creating a website or application that is easy to use, designed to be appealing, converts users into paying visitors, and is under-budget requires proper planning.

Through my experience of working on numerous projects over the years, I have found that mapping out a strategy before diving into a project has always ensured that goalsare met.

Here are the three steps needed by every new web development project:

1. Discovery and Scope Definition

What is the mission and scope of the project?

How does the organization determine and measure success?

Who are the target users, buyers, visitors, etc?

These are the questions which need to be addressed before any web project is started.

The first step in any successful campaign involves a research phase to discover the core requirements like usability features and written and visual content.

Once research is complete, a project scope can be set which includes key performance metrics to follow.

Budgets, core features, and the outline for a minimal viable product can be defined for the life of the project. However, teams do need to be agile and adapt to changes that may happen along the way.

3. Design and Development

The best website designs are consistent, responsive, and built to convert visitors into paying customers.

To accomplish this, core design features must be made with development requirements in mind.

This includes taking into account the rise of mobile device use and changes in search engine optimizaiton like voice and location.

A transparent development processes with clients which communicates progress and opportunities keeps them informed throughout the design and development phase of the project.

3. Deployment and Analysis

Prior to launching a website, quality must be assured through testing.

Every link needs to be clicked and every form needs to be filled out. If a response email is needed, make sure it is being sent.

If third-party analytics suites like Google Analytics or Facebook Pixels are being used, make sure they are tracking correctly.

Consideration for hosting must be determined as well.

I choose to host websites in the cloud using Google Compute Engine and Google App Engine. The advanatages include:

  • Blazing speed and performance
  • Hhaving the flexibility to scale resources up or down as needed.
  • An infrastructure built by one of the world’s leading tech companies

Data processing and analysis gives clients a strategic advantage.

After a business website goes live, an analysis phase begins where usage, search, sharing, and other relevant metrics are monitored to get insights based on facts.

Following these steps will hopefully give your next marketing campaign the strategic advantage needed to achieve real results.
